At Bair Bikes, we recommend having your bike professionally serviced at least once every 12 months or approximately every 1,000 km, whichever comes first. However, your riding conditions and how often you use your bike can mean it needs attention sooner.

Here are seven signs it might be time to book your bike in.

1. Your Brakes Don't Feel Like They Used To

If your brakes feel soft, make unusual noises or aren't stopping you as confidently as they once did, don't wait until your next scheduled service.

Brake pads and other braking components naturally wear over time, particularly on eBikes which are typically heavier than standard bikes.

2. Your Gears Aren't Shifting Smoothly

Your gears should change smoothly and predictably. Clicking, skipping gears or struggling to shift can indicate that your drivetrain needs adjustment or maintenance.

Addressing these problems early can also help prevent unnecessary wear to other components.

3. You're Hearing New Squeaks, Clicks or Rattles

You know your bike better than anyone.

If a new sound suddenly appears, there's usually a reason for it. It could be something as simple as a component needing adjustment, but it's worth having it checked before a small issue turns into a larger repair.

4. Your Battery Range Has Changed

Battery range will naturally vary depending on terrain, rider weight, weather and the level of electric assistance you're using.

However, if you've noticed a significant or unexplained change in how far your eBike travels on a charge, it may be worth having the battery checked.

5. The Bike Hasn't Been Ridden for a While

A bike sitting in the garage isn't necessarily a bike that doesn't need servicing.

Tyres can lose pressure, batteries need appropriate care, components can develop corrosion and lubricants can deteriorate.

If your bike has been sitting unused for an extended period, particularly over winter, consider having it checked before heading out on your first long ride.

6. You've Been Riding in Tough Conditions

Living on the Surf Coast means our bikes can be exposed to sand, salt, rain and plenty of changing weather.

These conditions can be harder on chains, drivetrains, brakes and other components.

If you regularly ride around Torquay, Anglesea, the Surf Coast or other coastal areas, cleaning your bike regularly and keeping on top of servicing is particularly important.

Sometimes there isn't one obvious problem.

What Happens During an eBike Service?
